A Lagos-based lawyer has shared his heartbreaking experience after the September 23 flood in Lagos left his car completely submerged and its engine damaged beyond repair.
The lawyer, who was driving towards Gbagada, explained that heavy rainfall quickly turned the road into a river, forcing him to abandon his vehicle as floodwaters rose dangerously high.
“The water got to my neck as I tried to cross the road. I was practically swimming, falling into hidden gutters, and narrowly escaped drowning,” he recounted in a video posted online.
Unfortunately, the incident didn’t just leave him with injuries it also left his car badly damaged. He revealed that street urchins (Agberos) demanded ₦20,000 before helping push the vehicle out of the flood, while he had to pay another ₦95,000 to get it towed home.
When his mechanic inspected the car, the diagnosis was devastating: the engine had completely knocked. According to him, replacing it would cost between ₦1.8 million and ₦2.5 million, an amount he admitted is overwhelming.
Sharing his pain, the distraught lawyer lamented:
“How Lagos flood finished my car and knocked the engine completely… The towing guys made serious money towing numerous cars that night. I am in tears! Which kind wahala be this?”
